Don’t discriminate
Columnist Peta Credlin asks “Does Labor really want votes from this crowd?” (SHS 4/8), then goes on to cast aspersions on Muslim Gaza residents (“likely Hamas supporters”) who are given visitor visas to come to Australia on humanitarian grounds.
Credlin’s concern is that they will become permanent citizens who will live in western Sydney electorates and vote for Labor.
But she has no objections to Christian migrants or refugees coming to Australia even when she does not know which way they will vote.
This has overtones of racial-religious bias that is not endorsed by Christian teaching.
Christians might oppose Islam but are taught to treat all people as equals and Muslims should be treated no differently.
Law breakers, irrespective of their religion, should be punished.
